Wormery Spring Health Check: Get It Working Properly

Spring is one of the best moments of the year for your wormery.

The temperature is lifting, the days are longer, and everything underground is waking up — worms, microbes, fungi, all the life that turns your kitchen scraps into something genuinely valuable.

And with a few small tweaks now, you can really get things moving.

Because a wormery in spring isn’t just ticking over.

This is when it starts to perform.

What a healthy wormery looks like

Lift the lid and have a quick look.

You’re aiming for:

• A light, crumbly texture (not compacted or heavy)

• A fresh, earthy smell

• Worms active near the surface when feeding

• Food gradually disappearing rather than sitting

If that’s roughly what you’re seeing — you’re in good shape.

And if it’s not quite there yet, don’t worry. Wormeries are very forgiving, and small adjustments make a big difference.

What’s actually going on (the science bit)

A wormery is not just worms.

It’s a living system.

Worms don’t actually eat your food scraps first — they eat the microbes growing on them. Bacteria and fungi break food down, and the worms then process that material into casts (vermicompost).

So when things slow down, it’s usually not the worms — it’s the conditions for microbial life.

Get that right, and everything else follows.

How to get your wormery working at its best

As things warm up, your job is to support the system — not interfere with it.

1. Air and structure

A quick fluff of the top layer prevents compaction and brings oxygen in.

Oxygen = active microbes = faster breakdown.

If things feel dense, adding a little biochar or dry bedding can really help improve structure.

2. Moisture balance

Think “wrung-out sponge”.

Too dry and everything slows.

Too wet and you lose airflow.

A moisture mat is one of the simplest ways to keep this stable, especially as feeding increases in spring.

3. Feed the microbes (not just the worms)

This is the big one.

If you boost microbial activity, your wormery speeds up naturally.

Adding Bokashi-treated waste is incredibly effective — it’s already pre-fermented, full of beneficial microbes, and much easier for worms to process. A great way of doing this is to add some of the ferment from your bokashi kit - OR simply add a sprinkling of Live BOKASHI Bran to your kitchen caddy every week.

It’s like giving your wormery a head start.

4. Minerals and balance

A small addition of rock dust provides trace elements that support microbial life.

A little lime mix helps buffer pH and keep conditions stable.

You don’t need much — just enough to keep everything in balance.

5. Keep it consistent

Little and often wins every time.

Regular feeding, occasional fluffing, and small adjustments will keep your wormery active and stable.

🌾 This is where it gets exciting: worm casts

Once everything is working well, you’ll start to see the real reward.

Worm casts (vermicompost) are not just compost — they are biologically active, full of microbes, enzymes, and plant-available nutrients.

You’ll notice:

• Fine, dark, crumbly material

• A rich, earthy smell

• A texture that holds moisture but stays open

This is what your soil loves.

🌱 How to harvest your worm compost

There are a few simple ways to do this:

• Move-and-feed method — push finished compost to one side and feed on the other. Worms migrate across, leaving compost ready to collect.

• Stacking trays — in systems like Can-O-Worms, worms move upwards as new food is added, leaving lower trays ready to harvest.

Take your time — there’s no rush.

💧 What about the liquid?

Most wormeries produce liquid (often called leachate).

Used carefully and diluted, it can be a useful soil drench.

But if you want something more consistent and powerful…

🌿 How to make simple worm tea

Worm tea is one of the easiest ways to apply biology to your soil.

Simple method:

• Take a handful of worm casts

• Add to water

• Stir well (or aerate if you can)

• Use within 24 hours

You’re effectively multiplying the microbes and applying them directly to your soil or plants.

🪱 Common questions we get (and quick answers)

“Why is it slow?”

Usually temperature or microbial activity — both improve naturally in spring.

“Should I feed more now?”

Yes, but gradually. Let the worms catch up with the season.

“Do I need to add anything?”

Not always — but Bokashi, minerals, and structure can make a big difference.

“Have my worms disappeared?”

They’ll be there — just moving to where conditions suit them best. If your worms have disappeared check for cocoons as often they will hatch out as it gets warmer and add a boost of wigglers.

🌾 Final thought

A wormery isn’t something you “fix once”.

It’s something you gently guide.

And spring is when it really comes into its own.

Better compost.

More activity.

Healthier soil.

And the quiet satisfaction of turning what would have been waste… into something genuinely useful.

🪱 Wiggly Tip

Don’t aim for perfection — aim for balance.

Your wormery will do the rest.
