A Proper Low-Cost Way to Get Started

This is Bokashi stripped back to basics.

No taps, no extras, no overcomplication — just a simple system that works. If you’re happy to take a practical, DIY approach, this will ferment your food waste just as effectively as more expensive kits.

What’s the Difference vs a Full Bokashi Kit?

This DIY version works — but it’s more hands-on.

Full Bokashi kits give you:

  • Easier liquid drainage

  • More convenience day-to-day

  • A smoother, continuous system

Why Biochar Makes This Better

We’ve included biochar in this kit for a reason.

It helps absorb nutrients, supports microbes, and improves the final compost quality — giving you better results than a basic DIY setup.

Turn your kitchen waste into living soil, cut your carbon footprint, and keep every nutrient cycling naturally.

The DIY Bokashi Composting Bundle includes everything you need to start composting at home — two airtight 10L buckets, your choice of Wiggly Bokashi Bran made here on our farm, and simple step-by-step instructions.

This low-cost, low-fuss system transforms food waste (even meat, dairy, and cooked leftovers) into a microbe-rich soil conditioner that locks carbon into the ground, boosts soil life, and helps your garden thrive.

Forget smelly bins and landfill guilt — with Bokashi, you’re creating a circular, regenerative system right from your kitchen counter.

The secret to healthy soil (and healthy gardens) starts with microbes. Bokashi fermentation builds up beneficial bacteria and fungi that feed the soil food web — the underground ecosystem that keeps plants, worms, and pollinators thriving.

How to Use:

  1. Collect kitchen scraps — cooked or raw, fruit, veg, meat, and dairy.
  2. Sprinkle 1–2 tablespoons of Wiggly Bokashi Bran per 2–3cm layer.
  3. Press down, add a handful of biochar or cardboard, and seal tight.
  4. Leave to ferment for 2–4 weeks.
  5. Mix into soil, compost, or your wormery.

These microbes digest waste, producing organic acids and enzymes that break down food fast once it hits the soil. That fermentation keeps oxygen low — so no rotting, no smell, and no methane.

Wiggly Tip: Add a little biochar to each layer. It’ll absorb liquid, give microbes a habitat, and hold nutrients for later use.

Here at Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, we make every batch of Wiggly Bokashi Bran using our own live Mother Culture — a blend of beneficial bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.

We grow, harvest, and process much of the feedstock ourselves, so there are no unnecessary food miles. The by-products (like wheat bran) come full circle — feeding microbes that feed the soil that grows our crops again.

We also use Bokashi composting across the farm — including food waste collected from local schools and restaurants — to return nutrients to our land and improve soil health.

The result?
Healthier soils that store more carbon, hold more water, and support more life — from earthworms to pollinators. Every handful of compost you make at home does the same thing.

When soil thrives, so do the creatures that depend on it: bees, beetles, butterflies, and birds. That’s the ripple effect of living soil.

🌍 Tackles Climate Change at Home
When food waste rots in landfill, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas 25× more powerful than CO₂. Bokashi stops that by fermenting waste safely and keeping carbon in a stable form.

💚 Builds Living Soil
Fermented waste turns into humus-like material full of beneficial microbes. Once added to soil, these microbes feed roots, improve structure, and increase water-holding capacity.

🐝 Boosts Biodiversity
Healthy soil means healthier gardens. More worms and fungi mean more insects and pollinators — and in turn, more birds, hedgehogs, and life above ground.

🚚 Cuts Waste Miles
Every kilo you compost at home saves fuel, reduces collection emissions, and keeps resources local — exactly the principle we use on our regenerative farm.

🌾 Improves Fertility Naturally
Bokashi adds organic acids and enzymes that break down minerals, making nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium available to plants.

Your small composting habit genuinely adds up — less waste, less carbon, more life.

No Tap Needed: Line the base with cardboard or biochar to soak up liquid.
Sweet Smell of Success: It should smell like cider vinegar — not rotten!
Perfect Mix: Bokashi works best with small, regular additions of bran.
Protect From Sunlight: Keep buckets in a cool, dry place.
Feed Your Soil Regularly: Add fermented waste to soil every few weeks for ongoing improvement.

Wiggly Tips:

  • Add a scoop of biochar to each bucket — it’ll supercharge your soil and lock carbon for decades.
  • Pair with a wormery for complete waste cycling.
  • Mix with garden compost for richer, more balanced humus.
  • If you garden in pots, add a handful of fermented Bokashi to the base when repotting — it’ll feed roots for months.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!
