The Hedgehog Barn is a sturdy, weatherproof, and beautifully made shelter designed to give hedgehogs a safe space to call home.
Whether you’re creating a wildlife-friendly garden or helping hedgehogs prepare for winter hibernation, this barn offers security, warmth, and comfort — all while looking great in your garden.

Handcrafted from FSC-certified timber, it features a clever, predator-resistant entrance tunnel, a waterproof roof, and plenty of internal space for nesting material.
It’s the perfect combination of good design, sustainability, and genuine wildlife benefit — helping one of Britain’s most beloved mammals recover and thrive.

  1. Place the barn in a quiet, shaded corner of your garden — ideally against a hedge, wall, or fence.
  2. Line the inside with a handful of dry leaves, hay, or straw.
  3. Ensure the tunnel entrance faces away from prevailing winds.
  4. Avoid disturbing the barn during hibernation (typically November to March).
  5. Clean gently in early spring, once you’re sure it’s empty.

Wiggly Tip: Create a “hedgehog highway” — a 13×13 cm hole at the bottom of your fence — to help hedgehogs roam between gardens safely.

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, we’re lucky to have seen a rise in hedgehog sightings over the past year — thanks to wildlife-friendly field margins, reduced chemicals, and better habitats.

Every Hedgehog Barn sold helps connect that same mission to your garden: more cover, more safe spaces, and more chances for hedgehogs to thrive.

Pair it with Vale’s Hedgehog Food and a shallow dish of water, and you’ll soon have regular visitors snuffling happily through your borders.

Hedgehogs are essential to a healthy ecosystem — natural pest controllers that eat slugs, snails, and beetles.
But as gardens have become tidier and more fenced-in, hedgehogs have lost nesting sites and feeding routes.

Providing a safe, enclosed habitat like this barn can increase survival rates by offering protection from badgers (their main natural predator), cold snaps, and human hazards such as bonfires and lawn machinery.
Encouraging hedgehogs back into your garden means fewer pests, more biodiversity, and a small but powerful act of regeneration.

Keep it happy:

  • Add fresh bedding each autumn.
  • Avoid using slug pellets or pesticides nearby.
  • Leave small gaps under fences for hedgehog access.
  • Provide a shallow bowl of fresh water — never milk.
  • Check compost heaps before turning (hedgehogs love to nest in them!).

FAQs
When should I put it out?
Any time of year — though autumn is ideal for hibernation and spring for nesting.
Where’s the best spot?
A quiet, shaded, dry area protected from wind and rain.
Do I need to clean it?
Only once a year in spring, after confirming it’s empty.
Can I feed hedgehogs nearby?
Yes — place food and water a few metres away to avoid attracting predators to the nest.
Will other animals use it?
Occasionally frogs or toads may take refuge too — all part of a thriving ecosystem!

Wiggly Tips:

  • Add Vale’s Hedgehog Food to your nightly routine.
  • Grow a little patch of wildflowers or log piles nearby — hedgehogs love insects.
  • Keep an eye out for droppings — a sure sign your barn has a new tenant.

The Wiggly Story: Bringing Your Garden to Life.

Nestled in the heart of rural Herefordshire, within The Duchy of Cornwall estate lies Lower Blakemere Farm – the cherished home of Wiggly Wigglers and founder, Heather Gorringe. From its humble beginnings on Heather’s kitchen table over 30 years ago, our small but dedicated team is working hard on a legacy of sustainability and regeneration. Our farm isn’t merely a plot of land; it’s a dynamic hub where we’re aiming to balance food production with biodiversity and since we started our regenerative journey there’s a real focus on improving soil health and sustainability. What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
