Make Your Own Birdseed Mix at Home: Step-by-Step Guide

Day 20 of the 24 days of Wiggle-mas! Also our last shipping day for Christmas - order before 3pm Today https://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/

Feeding garden birds is a fantastic way to support wildlife while enjoying visits from feathered friends. Making your own birdseed mix is easy, fun, and allows you to customise it to attract specific birds. Here’s a simple guide to creating your mix, along with the best feeder options for it.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Click & Collect Black Sunflower Seed 12.55kg Click & Collect Premium Peanuts 12.55kg

For a balanced mix that appeals to a variety of birds, combine:

  • Sunflower Seeds (black oil) – high-energy and loved by most birds.
  • Peanuts (shelled and chopped) – good source of protein and fat (make sure they're unsalted and unroasted).
  • Millet – small and appealing to sparrows, doves, and finches.
  • Cracked Corn – great for larger ground-feeding birds like doves and blackbirds.
  • Oats or Rolled Barley – affordable filler that’s enjoyed by many species.

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Dried Mealworms – excellent for protein, especially during nesting season.
  • Niger Seed – a favorite for finches.
  • Safflower Seeds – not only nutritious but also disliked by squirrels.

Step 2: Mix It Up

In a large bowl or bucket, mix your chosen ingredients in equal parts. Adjust quantities depending on the types of birds you want to attract – for example, add more sunflower seeds if you want to attract finches and sparrows, or more peanuts for woodpeckers.

Step 3: Choose the Right Feeder

The best feeder depends on your mix and target birds:

  • Tube Feeders: Ideal for seed mixes with smaller ingredients like sunflower seeds, millet, and cracked corn. Tube feeders attract a wide variety of small birds like finches, chickadees, and sparrows.

  • Platform or Tray Feeders: Great for a mix with larger items like peanuts and cracked corn. These feeders work well for ground-feeding birds like doves and blackbirds and are also suitable for larger birds.

  • Mesh Feeders: Perfect for peanuts and larger seeds. Mesh feeders are excellent for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and other birds that can cling.

Step 4: Place Your Feeder

Hang or place your feeder in a quiet, sheltered location where birds feel safe. If possible, choose a spot near trees or shrubs for easy access and a quick escape from predators.
