For fungal compost, soil biology & proper living soil systems

Build better compost. Grow better soil. Do it properly.

  • Improve fungal compost quality and biological activity

  • Speed up stabilisation of finished Johnson–Su compost

  • Boost microbial life for compost extracts and soil application

Adding worms to a Johnson–Su bioreactor is one of the simplest ways to improve the final compost — but only when done at the right time and in the right way.

These are the same composting worms we supply for wormeries (reds and dendras) —
but in a Johnson–Su system, they are used differently.

They are not there to process raw waste.

They are there to refine, structure and biologically enrich finished compost.

View full details
  1. Prepare a bedding area (coir or cardboard) in the top section
  2. Add worms onto the bedding
  3. Leave them to burrow naturally
  4. Keep conditions moist, not wet

Do not bury them — they’ll find their way.

Once your Johnson–Su compost is ready, it becomes a biological input, not just compost.

You can make:

👉 Compost Extract (simple, powerful, scalable)

  • Add compost to water
  • Stir or agitate (IBC, tank, or bucket)
  • Apply immediately to soil or crops

This transfers microbes directly into your soil.

👉 Worm Tea (aerated version)

  • Compost + water + aeration (pump)
  • Brew for 12–24 hours
  • Apply as a liquid biological feed

This builds microbial populations before application.

On farm (what we do)

At Lower Blakemere Farm, we use:

  • Compost extracts
  • Worm-based biology
  • Bokashi systems

…to improve soil structure, reduce inputs, and build resilience.

This isn’t theory — it’s how we farm.

This product sits right at the crossover:

  • Home growers using IBC systems
  • Market gardeners
  • Regenerative farmers
  • Soil enthusiasts

If you’re serious about soil — this is part of the toolkit.

📦 What you receive

  • Fresh, active composting worms
  • Mixed species (reds + dendras)
  • Packed carefully to arrive in top condition

Available:

  • With bedding (recommended)
  • Without bedding

Are these different worms to your normal composting worms?
No — same worms, different use.

Can I use these in a wormery?
Yes — they are ideal.

Can I add them at the start of a Johnson–Su?
No — only after the compost has cooled.

Do I need bedding?
Strongly recommended — it helps them establish properly.

🌱 The Wiggly way

We’ve been working with worms for decades — on a real working British farm.

From kitchen waste to field-scale biology, everything we do is about:

👉 building better soil
👉 reducing waste
👉 supporting life below ground

These worms are a small part of that —
but used properly, they make a big difference.

If you’re building a Johnson–Su system, don’t skip this step.

Add worms. Add bedding. Let biology do the work.

  • 💡 WIGGLY TIPS

Always include bedding when setting up — helps worms settle quickly

Feed from one side so worms migrate steadily

Rotate zones to keep oxygen high

    Protect from frost in winter

  • 🌍 ECOLOGICAL NOTE

Both species are surface-dwelling (epigeic) worms that rarely burrow deeper than a few inches.

    Unlike:

    Endogeic worms – soil dwellers
Anecic worms – deep burrowers like lobworms

This is why they are ideal for wormeries and compost systems.

  • ♻️ SUSTAINABILITY & PACKAGING

    Packaging is recyclable and minimal

Bedding goes straight into your wormery

    We minimise materials wherever possible

  • 🤝 LIVE ARRIVAL GUARANTEE

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!
James T.
Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
