π How to Rescue Your Wormery
1οΈβ£ Remove any slimy or foul-smelling waste.
2οΈβ£ Rehydrate the coir bedding block and spread evenly in the tray.
3οΈβ£ Add your new worms and sprinkle a handful of Lime Mix.
4οΈβ£ Mix in a scoop of Worm Treat for instant microbial activity.
5οΈβ£ Cover with the Moisture Mat and close the lid.
6οΈβ£ Leave 2β3 days before feeding lightly with fresh scraps.
Within a fortnight your worms will be feeding and breeding again, producing rich, sweet-smelling vermicompost and liquid feed.
π§ Before You Buy β Check for Life and Fixable Problems
Even if you canβt see worms, donβt assume the system is dead.
π₯ Look for Worm Cocoons
Tiny oval lemon-pip-sized eggs, yellow to amber turning dark brown as they mature, are a sign of life. Each can hatch up to three baby worms within 2β4 weeks once warmth and moisture return.
To encourage hatching:
-
Keep conditions moist, airy, and neutral (pH β 7).
-
Add a little fresh bedding and cover with a Moisture Mat.
Common Problems and Simple Fixes
No airflow
Rotten smell, soggy compost
β Fluff material, add cardboard, add Worm Treat
Too acidic
Worms escaping, sour smell
β Add Lime Mix, reduce citrus and onion waste
Too wet
Pooling liquid, sluggish worms
β Drain liquid, add bedding, improve airflow
Wiggly Tip: Most problems come down to airflow or acidity β both easy to fix.
π± Add a Handful of Soil
A small scoop of garden soil introduces beneficial microbes and natural grit, helping worms digest food and stabilising pH. It mimics the top of a healthy woodland floor and brings your wormery back into biological balance.
π Restart or Top Up β Your Choice
You rarely need to empty everything:
1οΈβ£ Keep any healthy material and mix it with half your new bedding.
2οΈβ£ Add worms and Lime Mix; save the rest for later.
3οΈβ£ Feed lightly and observe.
Using part of the kit as a refresh rather than full replacement keeps existing microbes alive and saves resources.
β Make Your Own Worm Tea
Even during recovery, your system can create superb liquid fertiliser.
From Leachate
Drain liquid, dilute 1 : 10 with water, and use on ornamentals.
From Castings (Best Method)
1οΈβ£ Mix 1 L worm compost + 4β5 L non-chlorinated water.
2οΈβ£ Aerate for 12β24 h (stir or use a small air pump).
3οΈβ£ Strain and apply within a day to roots or as a leaf spray.
Aerated worm tea multiplies beneficial microbes that improve soil structure, boost root health, and help plants resist disease.
