A three-layer worm system for healthier soil

Bring tired soil back to life with a balanced blend of deep-burrowing Garden Worms (Lumbricus terrestris) and surface-dwelling Composting Worms (Eisenia andrei and Dendrobaena veneta).

Together they improve drainage, aeration, and fertility from the bottom up and the top down.

Perfect for:

  • Raised beds

  • New-build gardens

  • Compacted borders

  • Vegetable plots

  • No-dig systems

  • Lawns and planting areas

  • Any soil that needs a biology boost

Add a generous mulch and keep living roots in the soil, and you’ll kick-start a thriving, self-sustaining soil ecosystem — the Wiggly way.

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, worms are central to how we build soil. This mix brings that same living-soil approach into your garden.

Worms do not fix bad soil.

They establish and multiply only when the environment suits them.

If the conditions are right, they will survive, breed, and spread.
If not, they will disappear.

The goal is not just to add worms — it’s to create the right conditions for them to thrive.

Before introducing your Soil Builder Worm Mix, check for:

Moisture
Soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp but not waterlogged.

Temperature
Active above 10°C.
Ideal range: 15–25°C.

Oxygen
Loose, aerated soil or organic matter.

Organic matter
Mulch, compost, leaf mould, or plant residues.

pH
Neutral to slightly acidic soils (roughly pH 6–7.5).

What to expect after adding worms

First 2–4 weeks
Worms settle in and begin building burrows.

1–3 months
Soil becomes easier to dig and more crumbly.

6–12 months
Visible worm casts, improved drainage, and stronger plant growth.

Worms work slowly but permanently.

Small Kit
Approx. 50 Garden Worms + 250 g Composting Worms
Great start for:

  • One raised bed (2 m × 1 m)
  • Or around 2 m² of soil

Medium Kit
Approx. 100 Garden Worms + 500 g Composting Worms

  1. Prepare the soil

Replace soil and add a thick organic mulch.
  6. Water lightly if dry
Keep soil moist for the first few weeks.

Keep them happy

  • Maintain a mulch layer on the surface
  • Keep soil moist, not waterlogged
  • Avoid synthetic fertilisers and harsh pesticides
  • Keep living roots in the soil as much as possible

Bare soil is a worm desert.

Provenance (transparent and important)

  • Composting worms are a native species mix selected for composting ability.
  • Garden worms (Lumbricus terrestris) are a native species.

For the global market, these worms are produced in large, stable populations in Ontario, Canada, mostly for fishing worms.

We source them in the UK - they are provided with plant-health certification, transferred to us in a sterile carrier, and packed fresh on our farm.

From our farm to your soil

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, worms drive our composting systems, manure breakdown, and regenerative soil building.

Every order helps support soil health, wildlife, and regenerative farming.

Wiggly Tips

  • Bare soil is a worm desert — always mulch.
  • Add compost little and often.
  • If beds dry out, soak and re-mulch.
  • Feed the soil food web, not just the plants.

Quick FAQs

Will the worms stay where I put them?
They’ll move to wherever conditions suit them best. Good mulch keeps them close.

Do I need to dig them in deeply?
No. Just place them into small holes and mulch well.

Can I add more compost later?
Yes — that’s exactly what keeps the system thriving.

When is the best time to add worms?
Spring or autumn, when soil temperatures are between 10–25°C.

Are the worms safe to introduce?
Yes. All worms are supplied under plant-health certification and packed in sterile bedding.

How quickly will I see results?
Most people notice improved soil texture within a few months, with bigger changes over the first year.

Goes well with

  • In-ground worm farm
  • Bokashi kit
  • Wiggly vermicompost
  • Wiggly Woolch
  • Leaf mould or garden compost

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
