If you’re looking to really spoil your garden birds or give a boost to fledglings, waxworms are a great option, and we have improved our packaging and sizing to make them more economical and easy to use. Soft, juicy, and packed with protein, they’re like the crème brûlée of the bird buffet. Here’s why they’re worth it—and how to keep them in tip-top nick.
🐛 What Are Waxworms?
Waxworms are the larval stage of the wax moth. They’re soft-bodied, wriggly, and full of energy-rich fat and protein—ideal for birds that need a quick, nutritious hit. (They are unviable so will not turn into wax moths.)
🐦 Which Birds Go Mad for Them?
-
Robins –They’ll come back time and time again.
-
Wrens – Hard to spot, but waxworms often tempt them out.
-
Blue tits & great tits – Big fans, especially during fledgling season.
-
Blackbirds – Will happily hoover them up.
-
Fledglings of all sorts – Soft and easy to digest, they’re ideal for growing birds.
Live waxworms are particularly brilliant during nesting and fledging season (spring and summer), when adult birds need calorie-dense food to keep themselves and their young going. But they’re useful year-round when natural food sources are scarce.
❄️ How to Store Live Waxworms
Waxworms like it cool—but not freezing.
-
Ideal temperature: 12-20°C (an unheated utility room is usually bang on).
-
Keep them in the ventilated tub they arrive in.
-
Remove any dead ones to keep the rest fresh.
-
Don’t refrigerate below 8°C or they’ll go into hibernation (or worse…).
They’ll usually last a couple of weeks if stored properly.
🧺 Wiggly Tips
-
Pop a few in your "I Love Robins" feeder or scatter on a bird table.
-
Feed first thing in the morning for best results—birds are hungry after a cold night.
-
Use them to tame your robins—you might just end up with one eating out of your hand…
Why Bother with Live Food?
Yes, it’s a bit wriggly. Yes, it’s not for the squeamish. But the benefits are massive:

Gets you closer to your garden wildlife
It’s not just bird food—it’s a connection to nature. And honestly, it’s a proper buzz when you see your local robin waiting for you every morning.
