Why Garden Worms are great + how to add them to your garden!

Our garden worms are Lumbricus terrestris, the same species that Charles Darwin studied extensively. These worms play a crucial role in soil health, making them arguably the most important organisms for soil production. As deep burrowers, they can reach depths of up to two meters, creating tunnels that facilitate water infiltration and soil aeration.

Introducing Lumbricus terrestris to your garden is straightforward: simply dig a hole and place a handful of worms into each. Avoid scattering them on the surface, as they breathe through their skin and need to be underground.

You don’t need to be overly scientific in your approach. After introducing the worms, you likely won’t see them for a while as they start working their way through the soil. This initial introduction is just the beginning of their long-term soil enhancement process.

Once you’ve added the worms, it’s best to cover the holes to protect them and provide the darkness they prefer. If you’re working with raised beds, consider giving the area a good watering, especially if the surface is dry. This creates a more favourable environment for the worms to thrive.
