You’ve heard of our Piggy Bank. You’ve heard of our Hedge Fund. Now it’s time for… Pond Tipping.

Not fly-tipping. Not farm drainage. This is all about tipping the balance back towards life – more frogs, more dragonflies, more ducks, more flowers, and yes… even a few fish.
We’ve got an old pond in the field that’s lost its sparkle. The cows love drinking there (a bit too much – they’ve been trampling all around the edges!). What we want is a pond that works for everyone: cattle, fish, frogs, bugs, bees, birds, bats, ducks – and us humans too.
So over the next three years, with Team Wiggly footing the bill (around £15,000 – definitely not something the farm could justify on its own), we’re going to:
-
Plant marginals and wildflowers.
-
Shape a few proper cattle drinking spots so the banks stay healthy.
-
Maybe clean out parts of the pond.
-
Explore adding a reed bed to keep water quality spot-on.
-
Stock some native fish (think crucians, rudd, tench).
-
Add habitat for dragonflies, frogs, hedgehogs, bats and birds.
-
And eventually… open up a few fishing pegs and picnic spots so people can enjoy it too.
It’s a wildlife project first and foremost, with the farm helping out on planting and practical works – and with you lot cheering us on, tipping in ideas, and following the journey.
We’ll be sharing updates all the way: frogspawn, first dragonfly, first fish, first picnic. And of course, we’ll ask you what to tip in next – a duck raft? More marginals? Maybe even a heron perch?
This is going to be fun, messy, muddy and marvellous. And we can’t wait to bring you along for the Pond Tipping ride.
