Quick fix — do this now:
- Stop feeding for a few days
- Cover food with bedding (cardboard/coir/paper)
- Add a Wormery Moisture Mat or newspaper layer
- Bury food properly — don’t leave it exposed
- Keep lid on tight
If it’s bad:
- Add a layer of dry cardboard
- Put a slice of bread or melon as a “trap” and remove it
What’s going on:
Flies are not the enemy — they’re part of decomposition.
But in a wormery, you want worms in charge, not flies.
Flies arrive when:
- Food is exposed
- It’s too wet
- There’s too much food for the worms to handle
They’re basically saying:
“Oi — this system’s out of balance.”
The Wiggly way:
- Feed little and often
- Always cover food
- Build a proper bedding layer — worms need structure
- Keep it slightly moist, not sloppy
Big picture:
A good wormery is a controlled ecosystem.
You’re managing who dominates — worms or opportunists.
