Dealing with Spider Mites in your Worm Farm

Just had this email in from a Wiggly Customer with a worm composter. Dear Wiggly I wonder if you could help me. I appear to have what I think are red spider mites in my container. Is there anything that I can do about it. Is it normal or is it an issue? Regards Sue.

Here’s our reply: Dear Sue Thanks for getting in touch. Red spider mites can pop up from time to time, especially when things are a little too moist or acidic for the worms’ liking – but don’t worry, they’re more of an annoyance to you than to the worms.

Here’s what will help

🪱 1. Breathe a bit of fresh air into the system

Take the lid off for a little while each day (pop it somewhere dry and shaded). Mites love it damp and dark – giving the top layer a chance to dry out a bit can help knock their numbers back.

🌱 2. Sprinkle with a bit of garden lime, lime mix or crushed eggshells
This helps neutralise the acidity and makes the environment a bit less inviting for the mites, while keeping it just right for your composting crew.

🍂 3. Cut back on the wet stuff for a bit
Lay off juicy scraps like melon, tomatoes, and citrus for a week or two – and try adding some dry shredded cardboard or torn-up egg boxes to soak up excess moisture. Adding DE powder is a great idea as well.

🧼 4. Wipe the lid and sides with a damp cloth
You’ll often see mites hanging around the lid or top edge. A quick wipe every few days can help reduce their numbers.

Most importantly – keep calm and compost on!
Your worms will still get on with the job, and red mites usually sort themselves out with a few tweaks. It’s all part of nature – and you’re doing a great job helping to turn kitchen waste into lovely living soil.

Worm Wishes and Mulch Regards
