Q: My bokashi bin isn’t producing any liquid—is that normal?
A: Yes, it can be! Unlike wormeries, bokashi bins don’t always produce liquid because the system is designed to ferment food waste anaerobically (without oxygen). The fermentation process creates a pickled environment, so moisture is generally retained inside the waste.
If your bokashi bin is dry, that’s perfectly normal—sometimes a little liquid (known as bokashi tea) drains, but it’s not guaranteed. However, if you do get liquid, it’s acidic and should be diluted before use (like 1:100 with water) and used as a fertiliser for plants.
If you’re expecting more liquid because your bokashi bin is new or you’re adding very watery scraps, try layering your waste with dry materials like shredded cardboard or paper to balance moisture. Overall, lack of liquid isn’t usually a problem in bokashi systems.
