🐦 Niger Seed FAQ – What Every Garden Birder Should Know

❓ What is niger seed?

Niger seed comes from the African yellow daisy (Guizotia abyssinica) and is tiny, oil-rich bird food loved by small finches and siskins. It’s packed with high energy fats that help little birds stay active and healthy all year round.

❓ Which garden birds will it attract?

Mostly finches – particularly goldfinches, siskins, redpolls and greenfinches – though occasionally other small seed-eating birds try it too. It’s especially great for birds with tiny beaks that can handle the minute seeds.

❓ Will niger seed sprout in my garden? 🌱

Nope! The niger seed in bird feed is heat-treated during processing, specifically to stop it from germinating. So you won’t suddenly have niger seedlings popping up under your feeder.

❓ Why doesn’t it grow, even if it’s just seed?

Because the seeds are treated with heat to stabilise them and eliminate any chance of sprouting, that’s good for storage and prevents accidental weed-like growth in lawns or borders.

❓ Do I need a special feeder?

Yes! Niger seeds are very small, so they easily fall through regular feeders or get wasted on the ground. A dedicated niger/nyjer feeder with tiny ports or mesh slots keeps most of the seed in the feeder and accessible only to small-beaked birds.

❓ When should I feed it?

All year round! But it’s especially popular in autumn and winter when natural food is scarcer and hungry finches are on the lookout for high-energy fuel.

❓ Any tips for success?

✅ Place feeders near shrubs or hedges – birds feel safer with cover nearby.
✅ Keep feeders clean and dry to avoid mould.
✅ Store your niger seed in a cool, dry container at home to keep oils fresh and attractive to birds.

❓ Will other birds eat it?

Most larger garden birds prefer sunflower hearts, mixed seed or suet. Niger seed is pretty much a finch exclusive party – so if you’re after goldfinches and siskins specifically, this is your ticket in.

❓ Is it messy?

A bit! Because the seeds are so tiny, some can fall out of the feeder or get shaken out by birds. A seed tray or squirrel-proof setup can help keep your patio tidy.

❓ Can I grow teasel or sunflowers instead? 🌻

Absolutely! These plants produce natural seeds that finches love and look great in borders. They’re a lovely eco-friendly complement to your feeder.

Want a quirky tip? Leave a few natural thistle heads out too — goldfinches will go wild for them! 🐦💫
