How to Prevent Worms from Drowning in the Tea Tray

If you’ve noticed some of your worms ending up in the tea tray, you’re not alone! This is a common occurrence, especially in the early days while they’re settling into their new environment. The good news is that there are a few simple ways to help prevent this from happening.

  1. Check the Filter Placement - Many worm bins have a filter to prevent worms from slipping through to the lower tea tray. If yours has detached, try securing it more firmly. You can also use a fine mesh, such as breathable fabric, to create an additional barrier and keep your worms where they belong.
  2. Add Bedding - A thick layer of damp cardboard or shredded paper on top of the composting tray can act as a barrier and encourage worms to stay put. Bedding materials also help regulate moisture and improve overall worm bin conditions.
  3. Monitor Moisture Levels - Excess moisture can cause worms to migrate downward in search of drier conditions. If you notice that your worm bin is too wet, add dry bedding materials like shredded newspaper or coconut coir to absorb the excess liquid and create a more comfortable environment for your worms.
  4. Regularly Drain the Tea - If too much liquid builds up in the tea tray, some worms may venture down and risk drowning. Be sure to drain the tea frequently to keep the lower section of your bin from becoming overly saturated.

Can You Still Use the Worm Tea?

Yes! In most cases, worm tea is still fine to use unless it has a foul smell. If it smells sour or rotten, it’s best to discard it. However, if it has a pleasant, earthy scent, it should be safe to dilute and use as a nutrient-rich fertiliser for your plants.

By following these simple steps, you can help keep your worms safe and ensure your composting system runs smoothly. Happy composting!
