Dig one hole. Count your worms.

You don’t need fancy equipment or a degree in wormology. Just grab a spade, a tray and a little curiosity!

Choose your spot. Pick a vegetable bed or flower border, rather than your compost heap.
Dig a hole. Aim for a block of soil measuring 20cm × 20cm × 20cm.
Count your wrigglers. Gently tease the soil apart over a tray and count the worms you find, big and small.
Put everything back. Keep the worms shaded and return them to their soil promptly.

Damp soil after rain is ideal. Avoid digging when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or very dry.

Make a note of your count and tell us how you get on! Remember, one hole is just a snapshot, and worm numbers vary with soil type, weather and the time of year.
