The Green Johanna is a top-performing hot bin composter that turns food waste - including cooked food, meat, fish and dairy - and garden waste into quality compost within months.

Designed in Sweden and made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, it has an expected lifespan of 10 years or more.

The Johanna’s patented airflow and ventilation systems create optimum conditions for a busy eco-system of composting micro-organisms to digest waste, releasing energy as they do – hence the term hot composter.

One Johanna hot composting bin is designed to cope with the average food waste of a household of five and compostable waste from an average garden.
A free aerator stick comes provided.

Design features

The Johanna hot bin composter is made up of easily-assembled sections that form an enclosed unit with an integrated base plate that allows easy access to composting micro-organisms while deterring rodents. It should be placed in a shady area on soil, grass or gravel.

The secure, twistable lid regulates the ventilation system to adjust air circulation. In cold weather, twisting the lid to the maximum locked position helps to maintain the ideal temperature inside.  The efficient airflow system helps to maintain an aerobic environment, which, together with effective layering and aerating, prevents odours.

Two secure, good-sized sliding hatches at opposite sides of the unit mean that your finished compost is easy to access but won’t leak out before you need it.

The Johanna has been designed robust enough to withstand Swedish winters and enable year-round composting. A Winter Jacket is available separately to provide insulation in cold weather.

Depending on conditions, your fresh organic compost should be ready to use after 4-6 months.

Also Recommended: our bundle with a 12.5kg bag of Complete Rot for Grass -  a composting solution designed to facilitate the easy decomposition of grass clippings. Crafted from restructured organic waste material, this product harnesses the power of natural enzymes and abundant free carbon. Its purpose is to counterbalance the excessive nitrogen levels that typically hinder the composting process of grass clippings.

FAQs for Hot Composting

1. What is hot composting? Hot composting is a method of composting organic materials that relies on microbial activity to break down the materials quickly, generating high temperatures in the process.

2. How does hot composting work? Hot composting works by creating the ideal conditions for microbes to rapidly decompose organic matter. This includes providing a balanced mix of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials, adequate moisture, and aeration. As the microbes break down the materials, they generate heat, raising the internal temperature of the compost pile.

3. What are the benefits of hot composting? Hot composting offers several benefits:

  • It produces compost quickly, usually within a few weeks to a few months.

  • High temperatures in the compost pile kill weed seeds, pathogens, and harmful bacteria, resulting in a sanitized compost.

  • Hot composting helps break down tough materials like meat, dairy, and diseased plant matter that may not decompose effectively in cold composting methods.

4. What materials can be composted in a hot composting system? You can compost a wide range of organic materials, including:

Green materials: Fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds, and fresh garden waste.

Brown materials: Dry leaves, straw, cardboard, paper, and woody materials.

5. What materials should be avoided in hot composting? Avoid composting materials such as meat, bones, dairy products, and oils, as they can attract pests and create unpleasant odors. Additionally, avoid composting materials treated with pesticides or chemicals.

6. How do I start a hot compost pile? To start a hot compost pile, layer green and brown materials in a 2:1 ratio (carbon to nitrogen) in a pile or compost bin. Keep the pile moist but not waterlogged, and turn it regularly to aerate the compost and maintain high temperatures.

7. How hot should a compost pile get? Ideally, a hot compost pile should reach temperatures between 54°C to 71°C. Temperatures in this range promote rapid decomposition and help kill pathogens and weed seeds.

8. How often should I turn a hot compost pile? Turn the compost pile every few days to a week to aerate the materials and distribute heat evenly. As the pile matures and temperatures decrease, you can reduce the frequency of turning to once every couple of weeks.

9. How long does it take for hot composting to produce usable compost? Hot composting can produce finished compost in as little as a few weeks to a few months, depending on factors such as pile size, materials used, and environmental conditions.

10. How do I know when the compost is ready? Finished compost will have a dark, crumbly texture and an earthy smell. It should no longer resemble the original materials used in the pile. You can also use a compost thermometer to ensure that the temperature has stabilised, indicating that the composting process is complete.

Remember, hot composting is a dynamic process influenced by various factors, so don't hesitate to experiment and adjust your methods as needed to achieve the best results.
