Give your Green Johanna Hot Composter the protection it deserves through the colder months with the official Winter Jacket – a durable, insulating cover that keeps composting microbes warm, active, and working even when the air turns frosty.

Designed specifically to fit the 330 L Green Johanna, this snug, weather-resistant jacket helps maintain internal temperatures of 40–70 °C, ensuring efficient hot composting all winter long.

Perfect for UK gardens, it extends your composting season and guarantees the Johanna performs at its best, no matter the weather.

Key Benefits

🌡️ Keeps Compost Hot in Cold Weather: Insulates your Green Johanna to maintain optimal microbial activity.
🪱 All-Year Composting: Prevents the internal temperature dropping below the composting threshold (≈ 40 °C), so your heap keeps working right through winter.
💨 Speeds Decomposition: Sustained warmth means faster breakdown of organic waste, even when outdoor temperatures fall below freezing.
🧥 Easy to Fit & Remove: Lightweight, flexible panels zip securely around the composter and lift off for cleaning or storage.
🌦️ Durable & Weather-Resistant: Made from long-lasting, waterproof material that stands up to repeated winters.

  1. Fit When Needed: Add the jacket when average outdoor temperatures stay below 5 °C for several days.
  2. Secure the Fit: Wrap the panels evenly around the composter, aligning zips and fastening snugly.
  3. Monitor Ventilation: Keep the lid vent slightly open to maintain airflow while retaining warmth.
  4. Remove in Spring: Take off the jacket once outdoor temperatures consistently rise above 10 °C.
  5. Store Clean and Dry: After removal, wipe down and store flat or rolled in a dry place ready for next winter.

Wiggly Tip: Combine your Winter Jacket with Complete Rot and Bokashi-fermented waste for an unbeatable all-season composting system. The microbes from Bokashi and the insulation from the jacket keep your compost hot, active, and odour-free.

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, we know composting doesn’t stop for the seasons — and neither should you.
Adding insulation to our compost systems helps maintain biological activity throughout winter, cutting methane emissions and keeping nutrients cycling back into our soil.
The Winter Jacket lets you do exactly the same at home: compost continuously, reduce waste, and feed your garden soil all year long.

🔥 Thermophilic Microbes: Stay active above 40 °C, turning waste into rich compost.
🧫 Pathogen Control: Sustained heat kills harmful bacteria and weed seeds.
💧 Balanced Moisture: Prevents condensation from freezing and maintains aerobic conditions.
♻️ Faster Results: Even in January, decomposition can continue without pause.
🌍 Lower Emissions: Hot composting releases CO₂ instead of methane — a major win for the planet.

✅ Add waste in smaller, frequent batches to keep microbes fed.
✅ Stir gently with the aerator stick weekly to circulate oxygen.
✅ Avoid adding large, cold loads of grass or wet material all at once.
✅ Keep the lid twisted to a semi-closed position to trap heat.
✅ If using Bokashi waste, layer it with dry browns like shredded paper or straw for perfect balance.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
