Q: I’ve just started a new worm farm, but the worms keep trying to escape. Why is this happening?
A: This is really common — and nearly always easy to fix 👍
If they’ve just arrived, this is normal:
-
Leave the lid off to start with
-
Take the moisture mat off
-
Worms move away from light, so they’ll go down into the bedding
👉 If indoors, leave a light on overnight — it helps them settle in
Don’t worry about small gaps —
👉 air is good
👉 you want them choosing to stay in the bedding
If it’s happening later on, it’s usually:
-
Too much food
-
Too wet or too dry
-
Not enough bedding
-
Temperature or vibration (washing machines are a classic!)
What to do:
-
Stop feeding for a few days
-
Add dry cardboard/paper
-
Make sure there’s good bedding
-
Add Lime Mix and Worm Treat (and a sprinkling of Rock Dust is great)
👉 Worms don’t leave for no reason — they’re telling you something
