We’ve been doing this for over 30 years, at home and on our Herefordshire farm. We test things properly, keep what works, ditch what doesn’t and avoid anything that sounds clever but falls apart in real life.
Compost properly (and avoid a smelly bin)
Good composting isn’t complicated — it’s biological.
When food waste and garden waste are treated properly (think Bokashi, worms and well-managed compost heaps), nutrients stay put, smells disappear and compost actually finishes. Do it badly and you get flies, slime and regret. Do it properly and the system more or less runs itself.
Build living soil (not just tidy dirt)
Soil isn’t brown stuff that plants sit in. It’s alive.
Healthy soil is full of microbes and worms quietly getting on with the job — unlocking nutrients, improving structure and helping roots do their thing. Feed the soil life and plants stop being needy. Ignore it and you’ll be forever fixing problems you didn’t need in the first place.
Grow better plants (with less faff)
Plants grown in living soil behave better.
They establish faster, cope with stress more calmly and generally look like they know what they’re doing. No constant propping up. No mystery issues. Just steady, reliable growth — whether you’re growing veg, flowers or filling tubs on the patio.
Feed birds right (less mess, more birds)
Bird feeding works best when the food actually gets eaten.
That means the right ingredients for the season, no cheap fillers, and less husk blowing round the garden or sprouting under the feeder. The bonus? What falls to the ground feeds the soil — and round the loop we go again.
Why we bother
Because it all joins up.
