Clay soil is rich in minerals but has tiny pore spaces, which means:

Worms respire through their skin and rely on air-filled pores and microbial food.
In raw clay, those conditions don’t exist.
Adding worms to unamended clay doesn’t improve soil — the worms will move on, or die.

That happens through organic matter + microbes, not worms alone.
