Adding a new tray to your wormery at the right time ensures your worms stay healthy and your composting continues smoothly. One clear sign you’re ready is when the current tray is mostly processed, with little fresh food visible and the contents resembling rich, crumbly compost.
If you notice the worms migrating upwards to the new tray or fresh scraps, it means they’ve finished with the old tray and are ready for more food. This natural behaviour helps prevent overcrowding and keeps the compost aerated.
Another indicator is the smell—if your current tray smells earthy rather than sour or rotten, it’s a good sign your worms are thriving and the composting process is on track. If it’s still a bit “green” or undecomposed, give it a little more time.
Waiting until the current tray is mostly finished before adding the next keeps your wormery balanced and productive, producing excellent compost without overwhelming your worms.
