Specialist Food for Ground-Feeding & Soft-Beaked Garden Birds — Mixed Fresh on Our Herefordshire Farm

Not all garden birds are seed-crackers. Some, like robins and blackbirds, simply can’t peck through tough husks — so we’ve made something just for them.
Our Softbill Mix is full of soft, high-protein ingredients like mealworms, sunflower hearts, rolled grains, suet, and raisins — easy to eat and gentle on delicate beaks.
Freshly mixed on our Herefordshire farm with care, Bokashi magic, and a touch of Wiggly wisdom.

Key Benefits

  • Tailored for soft-billed birds (robins, blackbirds, thrushes, wrens, wagtails, dunnocks).
  • Soft and easy to eat – no husks or hard seeds to struggle with.
  • High in protein, oils, and natural fats for strength, condition and warmth.
  • Ground-feeding design – best on trays, tables, or open feeders (not seed tubes).
  • Includes dried mealworms and Bokashi – gut-friendly, nutrient-rich and irresistible.

What are Softbill Birds?
Softbills are species whose beaks aren’t built to crack tough seeds. They feed on insects, worms, soft fruits, and gentle grains.
Think robins, blackbirds, thrushes, wrens, wagtails, and dunnocks — birds that flit across the lawn, perch low, or rummage in hedges.

By contrast, hard-bill birds (like finches, sparrows, and greenfinches) can crush seeds and husks easily — they’re better suited to seed mixes and tube feeders.

Who You’ll Attract
You’ll welcome robins, blackbirds, wrens, wagtails, song thrushes, and dunnocks — all of which love the soft texture and high protein content.
You may also spot a bold starling or two joining in if the word gets out.

How to Feed Them

  • Scatter the mix on a ground feeder tray, bird table, or open-style feeder dish.
  • Avoid narrow tube feeders – softbills can’t perch and peck like finches.
  • Feed early morning and late afternoon, when softbills are most active.
  • Keep food fresh and remove any damp leftovers to avoid pests.
  • Clean trays and tables regularly for healthy, happy birds.

Best Served On

  • Ground Feeder Tray (Best Option): Perfect for robins, thrushes and wagtails. Choose one with fine mesh or drainage holes to keep feed dry.
  • Bird Table: Great for slightly raised feeding away from predators — ideal for blackbirds and wrens.
  • Open Feeder Dish: Works well for robins and small birds if you want to hang something off the ground (try our I Love Robins feeder).
  • 🚫 Avoid Tube or Caged Feeders: Too enclosed for softbills to use comfortably.

Each Ingredient Plays Its Part

  • Dried Mealworms: Insect protein for muscle and feather growth.
  • Sunflower Hearts: Soft, shell-free energy boost.
  • Cut Maize: Carbohydrates for stamina and body heat.
  • Pinhead Oats: Perfect size for wrens and smaller birds.
  • Rolled Wheat, Barley & Naked Oats: Slow-release energy grains.
  • Raisins & Sultanas: Fruit sweetness and natural sugars.
  • Peanut Pieces: High-fat and chopped small for safety.
  • Suet Pellets: Fats and calories for cold weather.
  • Bokashi: Fermented bran for natural gut health and immunity.

Wiggly Tip
Scatter a small handful in two spots — one open, one tucked near a hedge. That way, shy wrens get a look-in and your robin won’t hog the lot.

Our Farm-Mixed Approach
We mix our Softbill Mix right here at Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire.
Not every ingredient can come from the UK (mealworms and suet pellets need a little help), but we choose responsibly sourced ingredients and always mix fresh to order.
It’s honest, practical and built for the birds that need it most.

Sustainability & Packaging

  • Small bags – compostable paper, recyclable and simple.
  • 12.55 kg sacksreusable woven polypropylene, returnable for re-use.
  • No extra packaging – we post larger sacks as they are to reduce waste and transport emissions.

Wiggly Tip
Reuse your big sack — they make great garden waste bags, compost collectors or log storage. Phil calls it “feed to firewood, full circle.”

Nature Benefits
Softbill species are vital in your garden — they help control insects, spread seeds and bring real song and character to your patch.
Feeding them the right mix keeps them strong through winter, spring nesting, and moulting seasons.

Good for You Too
Few sights are as cheering as a robin hopping in for breakfast.
Feeding softbills gives you a front-row seat to nature, daily — and it’s proven to lift your mood and reduce stress.

Wiggly Tip
Keep feeders topped up and visible — once softbills know there’s food, they’ll visit every day (and they’ll tell their friends).

Storage & Freshness
Store in a cool, dry, sealed container. Avoid damp sheds or warm spots — both encourage mites and mould.
This mix contains natural fats and fruits, so freshness really matters.
Buy little and often for best results — your birds will notice the difference.

Wiggly Tip: If any seed clumps or looks damp, dry it on a tray in the sun or feed it to your worms — nothing’s wasted at Wiggly!

Goes Well With
A handful of live mealworms for extra protein,
a low-level feeder tray or bird table,
and a few British Suet Balls for additional fat and warmth through cold snaps.

Quick FAQs
Will it sprout under my feeder?
Hardly — it’s made of soft grains and de-hulled ingredients.
Is it safe for fledglings?
Yes — the gentle texture and size make it ideal for young and adult birds alike.
How long will it keep?
Cool, dry storage = several months. But fresher is always better.
Can I use it in my hanging seed feeder?
Not recommended — it’s too soft and fine for narrow tubes. Use trays or tables instead.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
