The New England Nest Box pairs a real shingle roof, lap-board sides and a silvered hole protector with sensible bird-first features. It looks lovely, lasts well, and—most importantly—works for the birds that need it.

Key Benefits

  • Attractive & practical: Coastal, beach-hut styling with a robust, weather-shedding build.

  • Safe nesting haven: Entry sized for small cavity-nesters (tits and similar), plus a metal hole protector to deter peck-enlarging by predators.

  • Sensible materials: Made from FSC-certified timber for durability and sustainability.

  • Easy to care for: Hinged panel with brass catch for quick, hygienic clean-outs.

  • Perch-free by design: No perch at the entrance—safer and preferred by tits.

Perfect for blue tits, coal tits, marsh tits, great tits and occasionally nuthatches—all species that naturally seek snug cavities to raise their broods. In return for a safe home, they’ll hoover up aphids, caterpillars and other pests, giving your borders and fruit a lift without chemicals.

Wiggly Tip: Early-season “prospecting” starts late winter—get the box up before March so it’s on their house-hunting list.

Chosen by the Wiggly team for bird-safe, sensible features: FSC timber, metal hole protector, hinged cleaning access—and a perch-free face. It looks the part on a shed, fence or mature tree, and blends into both cottage and contemporary gardens.

“We’ve had blue tits nesting every year since putting this up—brilliant to watch from the kitchen window.” — Verified Wiggly customer

  • Safer for birds: A perch gives cats, magpies, jays, crows and squirrels a handy place to balance while raiding a nest.
  • Tits don’t need one: Cavity-nesters cling to the entrance and hop straight in—no landing perch required.
  • Fewer losses: Perch-free fronts reduce predation risk at the hole and improve nesting success.

Bottom line: No perch = good design.

Siting

  • Mount 1.5–2.5 m above ground on a tree, wall or post.
  • Face east ideally (SE or NE also fine) for morning warmth without afternoon overheating.
  • Keep clear of leap-points for cats and away from busy doorways.

During the season (April–May): Watch from a distance—avoid opening or tapping the box (disturbance can cause abandonment).

Cleaning (Sept–Feb):

  • Swing the brass catch upright, open the side panel, remove old nesting material.
  • Disinfect with a bird-safe cleaner (e.g., Wildkleen).
  • Allow to dry and close up ready for next season.

Optional: You may repaint annually with a water-based, wildlife-safe exterior paint if you want to maintain the beach-hut look.

Goes Well With

  • Nesting Refill Pack (for lining and winter roosting material nearby)
  • Wiggly Huskless Bird Seed Mix
  • Live Mealworms (power food for parents feeding chicks)
  • I Love Robins Feeder (for a busy, bird-friendly corner)

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
