What Farmgate Friday is

Twice a month, we open the farm gate with something that makes sense this week.

It might be seasonal.
It might be surplus.
It might be a small batch we don’t normally sell this way.

It’s available for one day only.
Then the gate shuts. layout.

Why it’s Farmgate Friday priced: Because this is a sensible farm moment.

The Mushroom Order Book is OPEN

Black Oyster & Lion’s Mane are back — in limited numbers.
Despatching week beginning 14th September.

This is exactly what we had in mind when we came up with Farmgate Friday.

Something genuinely good becomes available.
We buy/make/grow a batch.
You buy it direct.
Everyone gets a better deal.

And when it’s gone, it’s gone.

No pretending we have an endless supply. No stretching an offer for another week because marketing says we should.

That’s farming.

And this week it’s FUNGI. 🍄

Fungi are much cleverer than they look...

We spend an awful lot of time at Wiggly Wigglers talking about worms, microbes, compost and soil.

And the more we learn, the more we realise just how important fungi are in the whole system.

The mushroom you eat is really only the fruit.

The main event is the mycelium — the extraordinary network of fine fungal threads growing through the block.

In nature, fungi are some of our great recyclers.

They produce enzymes that help break down tough plant materials including cellulose and lignin — the woody stuff that is much harder to decompose.

And in soil, fungal networks are part of the enormous underground biological system that cycles nutrients and helps build healthy soil structure.

So growing one of these kits is actually a rather brilliant little window into what is happening on a much bigger scale outside.

Except you get to fry the end result in butter.

Which is a definite bonus.

🖤 BLACK OYSTER — the easy one

Fast, dramatic and forgiving.

They produce wonderful dark clusters and have a proper savoury, meaty flavour.

Fry them in butter, chuck them into noodles, pasta or risotto, roast them or pile them onto toast.

If you've never grown mushrooms before, start here.

🦁 LION’S MANE — the bonkers one

There really isn't much else that looks like Lion’s Mane.

It appears as a great shaggy white pom-pom and has a firm texture and delicate flavour often compared with seafood.

Slice it, fry it in butter until golden and eat it straight from the pan.

And yes — it really does grow like that.

The Wiggly Story: Bringing Your Garden to Life.

Nestled in the heart of rural Herefordshire, within The Duchy of Cornwall estate lies Lower Blakemere Farm – the cherished home of Wiggly Wigglers and founder, Heather Gorringe. From its humble beginnings on Heather’s kitchen table over 30 years ago, our small but dedicated team is working hard on a legacy of sustainability and regeneration. Our farm isn’t merely a plot of land; it’s a dynamic hub where we’re aiming to balance food production with biodiversity and since we started our regenerative journey there’s a real focus on improving soil health and sustainability. Beyond our own endeavours, we’re passionate about sharing best practices and developing products designed to Bring your Garden to life.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
