🔄 Restarting my wormery – what do I need?
Whether it’s gone a bit wrong or you’ve just emptied it — restarting is straightforward 👍
If it’s gone off balance:
-
Remove excess wet/sludgy material
-
Add extra bedding - damp shredded cardboard, or soaked coir, or a few cup fulls of soil
-
Add a small worm top-up
-
Leave it a few days before feeding again
👉 Most problems are just imbalance — this resets things
If you’ve emptied it and are starting again:
-
Add a good layer of fresh bedding (damp shredded cardboard, or soaked coir is best)
-
Add your worms
-
Leave the lid off to start with so they settle down into the bedding
-
Feed lightly once they’ve settled
👉 Worms need to feel comfortable before you start feeding properly
To improve things going forward:
-
Biochar holds nutrients and improves airflow
-
Rock dust adds trace minerals and supports better compost
👉 Together they help stabilise the system and improve your worm castings
A couple of useful worm facts:
-
Worms breathe through their skin → they need moisture + airflow
-
They avoid light → they’ll move down if conditions are right
👉 You don’t need to seal it — you need them choosing to stay
👉 Easiest option (if you just want it sorted):
The Wormery Rescue Kit – Fix Smelly, Soggy or Slow Wormeries Fast is designed exactly for this
-
Rebuilds worm population
-
Rebalances acidity
-
Restores airflow
-
Gets everything working again quickly
👉 It’s essentially everything you need in one go rather than guessing
