Your all-natural mineral boost for wormeries, compost, soil and more.

Give your wormery, compost bin or garden soil an extra layer of protection and performance with Diatomaceous Earth (DE Powder). This fine, mineral-rich powder is derived from the fossilised remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms — offering high surface area and remarkable physical properties. At Wiggly Wigglers we source a grade that works safely around worms and biology. Use it to absorb excess moisture, control odours, support soil health and deter unwanted pests. Whether you’re maintaining a wormery, preparing compost, or conditioning garden beds, this powder is the quiet hero that keeps things running smoothly.

Key Benefits

  • Moisture & odour control: Acts like a super-sponge to soak up rogue dampness and keep smells at bay.

  • Worm-ery friendly: Safe for worms when used correctly, providing a cleaner, more balanced environment.

  • Soil and compost accelerator: Helps retain nutrients, boosts microbial habitats and improves physical structure.

  • Natural pest deterrent: Creates conditions tough for fruit flies and ants, making composting life easier.

In a wormery: lightly dust the surface of the bedding or worm farm contents when it’s damp but not soggy. This helps absorb excess moisture and reduce odours and pests. For compost: mix 10-20% by volume of DE into your compost materials or bedding. In the garden: sprinkle a handful around plants or mix into the top layer of soil, then lightly water in. Always apply in moderation and ensure the surrounding environment is not overly dry when using around worms or compost systems.

Wiggly Tip: Chop your food waste smaller, add DE, then cover with card or mulch — better breakdown, fewer flies.

On our Herefordshire farm we’ve long used DE-style minerals to support compost bays, wormeries and soil building. This product reflects that practical farm experience — a mineral-rich amendment that works across systems. When you add it to your home compost or soil, you’re mimicking the way we build living soil here — combining organic waste, worms, microbes and structure. Low-waste, circular, effective.

Without proper structure and microbial habitat, waste breakdown and healing soils slow down or stall. DE’s porous, high-surface-area structure acts like a sponge for nutrients and water, provides homes for microbes and fungi, and helps prevent anaerobic zones where odours or methane could form. In composting systems, that means faster, cleaner breakdown. In garden soils it means improved structure, water retention, root development and nutrient cycling. Essentially, it makes biological systems work better by giving them a stable physical scaffold.

Keep it working: store dry and apply thinly; mix rather than dump; use in conjunction with organic matter; avoid drift of fine dust in windy conditions.

FAQs

  • Is it safe for worms? Yes — when used as instructed, it’s harmless and supports the system.
  • Can I use it in soil directly? Yes — it improves soil structure and microbial habitat over time.
  • Does it control insects? It’s not a chemical insecticide — but works physically to deter pests by altering surface conditions.
  • How much should I use? For compost add ~10-20% by volume; for wormeries apply a light dusting; for soil apply a handful per m² and mix in.
Wiggly Tips: Keep mulch on the soil surface, combine with worm tea or compost, and treat this as part of your living soil toolkit — not a one-off fix.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
