Wiggly FAQ

Which worms do I need for my soil or compost?

Different worms do different jobs โ€” in fact there are over 2000 species Worldwide (we have 3 indigenous UK species)

For composting food waste:

๐Ÿ‘‰ You need composting worms (Dendrobaena / Eisenia)

  • Live near the surface

  • Thrive on food waste

  • Turn scraps into rich compost quickly

  • Produce liquid feed

๐Ÿ‘‰ Theyโ€™re brilliant โ€” but only if the environment is right

  • Good bedding

  • Right moisture (damp, not wet)

  • Airflow

For improving your soil:

Worms arenโ€™t a quick fix โ€” improve your soil first, give them the right food and conditions, and theyโ€™ll do a brilliant job.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The worms you need for this are garden worms (like lob worms / earthworms)

  • Live deeper in the soil

  • Improve structure and drainage

  • Pull organic matter down

  • Build long-term soil health

๐Ÿ‘‰ They donโ€™t want bins โ€” they want:

  • Organic matter (mulch, compost, roots)

  • Undisturbed soil

  • Decent moisture

A simple way to think about it:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Composting worms = recycle waste
๐Ÿ‘‰ Garden worms = build soil

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best results? Use both

  • Compost your waste first (Bokashi + wormery)

  • Feed the soil with the output

  • Let garden worms take it from there
