Which worms do I need for my soil or compost?
Different worms do different jobs โ in fact there are over 2000 species Worldwide (we have 3 indigenous UK species)
For composting food waste:
๐ You need composting worms (Dendrobaena / Eisenia)
-
Live near the surface
-
Thrive on food waste
-
Turn scraps into rich compost quickly
-
Produce liquid feed
๐ Theyโre brilliant โ but only if the environment is right
-
Good bedding
-
Right moisture (damp, not wet)
-
Airflow
For improving your soil:
Worms arenโt a quick fix โ improve your soil first, give them the right food and conditions, and theyโll do a brilliant job.
๐ The worms you need for this are garden worms (like lob worms / earthworms)
-
Live deeper in the soil
-
Improve structure and drainage
-
Pull organic matter down
-
Build long-term soil health
๐ They donโt want bins โ they want:
-
Organic matter (mulch, compost, roots)
-
Undisturbed soil
-
Decent moisture
A simple way to think about it:
๐ Composting worms = recycle waste
๐ Garden worms = build soil
๐ Best results? Use both
-
Compost your waste first (Bokashi + wormery)
-
Feed the soil with the output
-
Let garden worms take it from there
