From Waste to Wellness: Why Living Soil Starts in Your Kitchen

Hi, I’m Heather from Wiggly Wigglers—and for over 30 years, we’ve been up to our knees in compost, proving how kitchen scraps can be turned into something extraordinary. From our Herefordshire farm, we help people all over the UK to use Bokashi and worms to transform everyday food waste into living soil—soil that feeds your veg, supports your gut health, and helps heal the planet.

And it seems a good time to shout about it as it is of course International Compost Awareness Week

Even if you’re really good about food waste (I doff my cap to you if you are :), there are always peelings, cores, coffee grounds, and the odd bit of plate scrap left behind. It’s unavoidable—but it’s also a golden opportunity. Instead of sending it to landfill (where it breaks down without oxygen and pumps out methane—25x more potent than CO₂), you can turn it into something brilliant. That’s what the circular economy is all about—closing the loop, keeping nutrients in use, and putting waste to work.

Here at Wiggly Wigglers, we use Bokashi to ferment food waste—locking in nutrients and preventing smells. Then, our composting worms (Dendrobaena veneta, to be precise) turn that fermented mix into worm castings, one of nature’s most powerful soil builders.

We call it living soil—and once you’ve used it, you’ll see why. It’s rich in microbes, fungi, and organic matter that improve soil structure, hold moisture, and unlock nutrients for plants. And when you grow your own food in that? You're not just eating fresher—you’re feeding your body with a more diverse and beneficial range of microbes. Yes, soil health is linked to gut health, and healthy compost-grown food helps support a healthy microbiome in you.

So whether you live in a flat or on a farm, the answer’s the same: don’t just collect your scraps—do something with them. Start with a Bokashi bin or a worm farm. You don’t need loads of space, and it doesn’t need to be messy or smelly.

This International Compost Awareness Week, let’s inspire a change that’s small, simple, and seriously impactful.

Less methane. More microbes. Healthier gardens. Happier guts.
Let’s make compost—and make a real difference.
