Bury the unit so the lid sits just above the soil surface. Add a little moistened coir bedding, tip in your composting worms, and start feeding with chopped fruit and veg peelings. Cover new waste with damp card or mulch and close the lid.

Keep the surrounding soil damp (think wrung-out sponge), and the worms will move in and out through the aeration holes, composting waste and spreading nutrients straight into the soil.

Just keep adding scraps — the contents steadily decompose into the surrounding ground. You may want to lift the lid and clear out settled material every few months, but in most gardens the system quietly takes care of itself.

Wiggly Tip: Chop waste well; smaller pieces mean faster composting and fewer fruit flies.

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, composting closes the loop between kitchen, animals, crops, and soil. Our in-ground worm farms do exactly the same at your home: turn food waste into soil, not methane.

Every unit supports regenerative practice — feeding soil biology, cutting greenhouse emissions, and proving that small, steady steps really do make a difference.

“Neat, tidy, and no smell. I’ve got one in the greenhouse and the tomatoes have never looked better.” — Verified Wiggly customer

Goes Well With:

Composting Worms

Biochar

Woolch

When kitchen waste ends up in landfill, it decomposes without oxygen and produces methane, a greenhouse gas about 25 times stronger than CO₂. By composting aerobically with worms, you turn that same waste into stable soil carbon instead of emissions.

Worm castings (vermicompost) are packed with beneficial microbes, enzymes, and humic compounds that improve soil fertility, water retention, and structure. They release nutrients gradually and help plants resist disease naturally.

Every scrap you compost in this unit saves waste miles, reduces emissions, and builds long-term soil health — proof that small gardens can make a big environmental difference.

Keep it happy:

  • Add only plant-based scraps — no meat, dairy, or oily foods.
  • Chop waste before adding; worms can’t chew, they grind!
  • Keep the surrounding soil and mulch damp.
  • Cover fresh waste with paper, mulch, or a Moisture Mat.
  • In winter, insulate with straw or compost; in summer, shade if needed.

FAQs
Does it come with worms?
No — this is the Unit Only version. Add Composting Worms for a quick start.
Do I ever need to empty it?
Very rarely. Most compost seeps into the soil, but you can scoop out settled material once or twice a year.
Will it smell?
Not if used correctly. The process happens below ground and stays sweet and earthy.
Can I use it in a greenhouse or raised bed?
Yes — it’s perfect for both. Install between plants and let the roots reap the benefits.

Wiggly Tips:

  • Feed little and often.
  • Keep soil life fed with mulch.
  • Add Bokashi waste for a microbial turbo-boost.
  • Enjoy knowing you’re cutting waste and growing life at the same time.

The Wiggly Story: Bringing Your Garden to Life.

Nestled in the heart of rural Herefordshire, within The Duchy of Cornwall estate lies Lower Blakemere Farm – the cherished home of Wiggly Wigglers and founder, Heather Gorringe. From its humble beginnings on Heather’s kitchen table over 30 years ago, our small but dedicated team is working hard on a legacy of sustainability and regeneration. Our farm isn’t merely a plot of land; it’s a dynamic hub where we’re aiming to balance food production with biodiversity and since we started our regenerative journey there’s a real focus on improving soil health and sustainability. What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
