Farm Manure – Fermenting Muck with Bokashi

On the farm, muck is part of the job – but what you do with it makes all the difference.

We’ve started adding Live Bokashi Bran to our cowshed bedding and manure. Why? Because instead of letting it rot, we’re fermenting it.

Here’s what that looks like:

🐮 The cows are in.
💩 The muck builds up.
🦠 We sprinkle Bokashi Bran into the mix.
👣 The cattle trample it down, pressing out air – just like your Bokashi bucket does with kitchen waste.

What happens next is magic (well, microbial magic):

🔸 Fermentation starts – controlled, anaerobic, and odour-reducing
🔸 Nutrients are locked in – especially nitrogen
🔸 We avoid ammonia release and leaching
🔸 When we finally spread it on the fields, the breakdown is faster and more beneficial for the soil

It’s like prepping your muck before composting – and the soil microbes love it.

📍 It’s also how we close the loop:
→ The cows feed on grass seed straw (a byproduct)
→ Their muck is fermented with Bokashi
→ That muck improves our soils and grows more crops
→ And the cycle continues

From cowpat to compost – it’s all in the microbes.
