Bokashi Bokashi Bokashi!

What if there was a method of composting that was so simple that it could easily be fitted into even the busiest lifestyles? What if there was a method of composting that was so quick that the kitchen waste from a large family could be composted in something as small as an 18 or 19 litre bin? What if there was a method of composting that meant that even the smelliest meat scraps (old fish skins anyone?) could be composted indoors; without smells and without attracting vermin? What if there was a method of composting where the drained-off liquid could be used to keep drains fresh?

Not even our superb composting worms can achieve all those things; but now there are some creatures that can! We'd like to introduce you to beneficial micro-organisms -  Beneficial micro-organisms are, we believe, going to revolutionise composting. The concept behind them was developed by Professor Teruo Higa from the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa back in the early nineties. His original idea was to take a mixture of the most beneficial of the naturally occurring micro-organisms and combine them into inoculants to increase the microbial diversity of soils. Research has shown that the inoculation of the soil/plant ecosystem with such cultures can improve soil quality, soil health and the growth, yield, and quality of crops. Their amazing effects in a composting system were only noticed later.

Our Bokashi contains a carefully controlled mixture of these beneficial bacteria, yeasts and fungi that work together to speed-up composting, suppress pathogens (no e-coli in a Bokashi composter), prevent putrefaction and eliminate bad odors. Working together they deliver a four-way knock-out blow against all the problems that beset conventional composters. Composting with Bokashi is simple, really simple, in fact it's the easiest to use composting system we've ever tried.


The active ingredients come in the form of our Bokashi Active Bran which is a dry mixture of bran and molasses that has been inoculated with the correct levels of Professor Higa's tiny creatures. Sprinkle a layer of Bokashi Active Bran over the kitchen waste you want to compost, and that's it's the beneficial micro-organisms in the Bokashi get to work treating your waste in a process that takes just a couple of weeks. At the end of the process the waste doesn't really look as though it has decomposed, if anything it looks as though it has been pickled, but when it is incorporated into soil (or added to a conventional compost heap) it breaks down amazingly rapidly, releasing large quantities of soil boosting probiotic micro-organisms which nourish the soil naturally.
