Fresh, wriggly, and full of goodness – packed on our Herefordshire farm

Live mealworms are a natural, high-energy food that birds and hens absolutely love.
They’re full of protein and moisture, supporting strong chicks, healthy adults, and happy flocks.

Unlike dried mealworms, these are DEFRA-approved for feeding to hens, safe for every age of bird, and a top choice for nesting season.
Packed fresh in paper bags (no tubs, no waste), they arrive lively and ready to feed under our Wiggly Live Worm Guarantee.

Who You’ll Attract
Robins, blackbirds, thrushes, wrens, wagtails, starlings, sparrows, and other soft-billed species.
During nesting season, parent birds will visit your feeder repeatedly, carrying mealworms back to their chicks — providing hydration and strength that can dramatically improve fledgling survival rates.

How to Feed Them

  • Offer in a shallow dish or live-food feeder with smooth sides.
  • Feed little and often, ideally morning and evening.
  • Position near cover (hedges, shrubs) for safety.
  • For hens, scatter sparingly or mix with feed for enrichment.

Best Served In
✅ Shallow dish or live-food tray.
✅ Ground feeder for robins and blackbirds.
🚫 Avoid deep seed tubes – worms need airflow.

Wiggly Tip:
Keep a small tub handy by the kitchen door — robins soon learn your routine and will wait for you each morning.

Our live mealworms are packed fresh on our Herefordshire farm and delivered quickly to arrive in top condition.
We use paper bags instead of plastic tubs — fully recyclable and better for the planet.

When they arrive, simply decant them into a shallow Tupperware box with tiny pinholes in the lid for air. Add:

  • A handful of bran or porridge oats for bedding (they’ll feed on it).
  • A slice or two of carrot or potato for moisture.
Store somewhere cool and dark — a shed, garage, or cool cupboard works perfectly.

In hot weather, we include insulation and cooling packs to protect them in transit.
We also check every order carefully under our Live Worm Guarantee, so your worms always arrive lively and healthy.

Sustainability & Packaging

  • Paper packaging – compostable and recyclable.
  • Reusable Tupperware storage – no plastic tubs.
  • Cool-pack shipping in hot weather.

Wiggly Tip:
Keep one tub for re-use — simply top it up with each delivery and you’ll never waste packaging again.

Feeding live mealworms can genuinely make a difference to garden bird survival.
Chicks can’t process dry food easily, and parents rely on soft-bodied insects to feed them. Live mealworms provide that natural source of moisture and protein — especially in dry spells when worms and beetles are scarce.

For you, they’re a joy to feed — you’ll see robins, blackbirds, and wrens showing off their natural hunting instincts. It’s one of the simplest, most rewarding ways to bring your garden to life.

Wiggly Tip:
Keep a bag of dried mealworms as backup for mixing into your suet or Huskless Mix if you run out of live ones.

Storage & Freshness

  • Store in a cool, dark place (around 8–10°C).
  • Use a Tupperware or shallow container with small air holes.
  • Add bran or porridge oats for bedding.
  • Add a few carrot or potato slices for moisture.
  • Clean out uneaten vegetables every few days.
  • Feed within 5–7 days for best results.

Wiggly Tip:
If your worms look sleepy, they’re just cool — warm them up gently and they’ll soon be lively again.

Goes Well With

  • Mealworm Breeding Kit – grow your own wrigglers at home.
  • Live Waxworms – a luxury live treat for variety.
  • Softbill Mix – perfect alongside live food for robins and blackbirds.
  • Dried Mealworms – a brilliant backup for mixing with seed or suet.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
