The bags of barley simply float on the top of your pond. If you have a pump, you may want to tie a weight to it so it doesn't move around too much.

The Science Behind Barley Straw
The exact mechanism by which barley straw controls algae is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve the release of certain chemicals as the straw decomposes under aerobic (oxygen-rich) conditions. These chemicals inhibit the growth of algae without harming other aquatic life. The effectiveness of barley straw depends on its decomposition rate, which is influenced by factors such as water temperature, oxygen levels, and the presence of microorganisms.

When and How to Use
For best results, barley straw should be applied to ponds in Spring and early summer, before algae have started to grow excessively. This timing allows the straw to begin decomposing and releasing its algae-inhibiting compounds as temperatures rise and algae growth becomes more likely. The straw should be loosely and anchored in the pond where there is good water flow and sunlight to facilitate decomposition. It may take a few weeks to see the effects, and the straw should be replaced every few months or so for continuous control.

How much Barley Straw?

We recommend about 10 to 25 grams of straw per square meter of pond area.

When should I apply the Barley Straw to my pond?

You can add barley straw to your pond all year round, but the most important factor is the temperature, in the summer months when the temperature of the water is above 20°C the process is faster compared to the winter months when the water temperature is below 10°C. Once the straw starts to decompose and release its natural chemicals, you should replace it in around 8 weeks.
