Proper Wool. From Real Sheep. Doing a Proper Job.

This isn’t pretty packaging fluff. It’s raw fleece, straight off the sheep here in Blakemere. We haven’t skirted or trimmed it – what you get is exactly as it came off the sheep. That means it’s full of character: a bit of straw, the odd seed head, and yes – some daggings (that’s bits of dried poo, in case you’re wondering). If you’re squeamish, wear gloves. But remember – sheep muck is fantastic for your soil.

This fleece is unwashed, untreated, and totally natural. It might smell a bit sheepy at first, but that fades fast – and your soil (and plants) will love you for it.

Real wool. Doing real good. Straight from the sheep. Straight to work.

Packed in a reused hessian coffee sack because we believe good things don’t have to come wrapped in plastic.

🧪 What’s It Made Of?

Wool is made from keratin – a tough protein that:

•Breaks down slowly, releasing nitrogen, sulphur, and potassium

•Feeds fungi and soil microbes, especially in no-dig gardens

•Supports long-term soil structure and biodiversity

It holds up to twice its weight in water (confirmed by the Journal of Textiles & Fibre Science, 2017), making it a brilliant buffer for dry spells and raised beds.

As it decomposes, the wool releases amino acids and trace minerals that nourish soil life and support plant growth – all without burning roots or leaching nutrients.🐌 Natural Slug Defence

Wool fibres are springy, rough, and moisture-absorbing – slugs and snails absolutely hate crawling over them.Mulch around your hostas, lettuces, or seedlings and you’ll create a physical barrier that keeps them off your precious greens. (Better still, you’ve not added a single chemical to your soil.)

🗓️ When to Use It (and Why)

🌱 Spring

•Warm your soil, protect seedlings, deter slugs, and hold moisture

•A gentle start for hungry young plants like cabbage and kale

☀️ Summer

•Cut your watering with wool’s sponge-like water retention

•Feed courgettes, brassicas, and containers without synthetic fertiliser

•Mulch raised beds or allotment rows to stop soil baking

🍂 Autumn

•Blanket beds, suppress late weeds, and prep for overwintering

•Start breaking down organic matter for early spring soil biology

❄️ Winter

  • Stop erosion, keep compost ticking over, and protect perennial roots
  • Lay a woolly layer over garlic, onions, or empty beds for soil life support

📏 Application Rate

•One 10kg sack = approx. 3–4m² at a depth of 2–3 cm

•Use thicker around crops or slug-prone areas•

Line hanging baskets or containers to retain water and nutrients

•Add in thin layers to compost heaps to boost long-term nitrogen

🌟 Wiggly Tip: Pull it apart a bit before you lay it. A fluffier layer lets water and air through while still blocking weeds.

💚 Supporting British Farming, Naturally

We believe waste should be useful, not hidden. Wool from our own Blakemere sheep (and local flocks nearby) is doing something far more useful than sitting in a pile or being shipped off for pennies. It’s going straight back to the soil, where it can do real good.

Every sack sold:

•Helps close the loop on waste

•Brings proper nutrients to your garden

•Supports our commitment to farming with wildlife, soil, and future generations in mind.

Updated review

Hi there, this is in response to your reply to my initial review. Thank you, I feel a little better and have increased my rating now that I know the black plastic sacks are recycled. I'm not a packaging expert, but I still agree with your statement in the blurb for woolch 'we believe good things don’t have to come wrapped in plastic'. It might just take a little more work to find a way. I have found, for example, that it is possible to buy very large paper potato sacks. Perhaps this is worth investigating.
I'm still delighted with the product and would happily buy more if it came in a paper sack or other compostable/reusable packaging for transport.

Fabulous wiggly woolch! Not so fab packaging 😕

I would SO love to give this 5 stars. The wool is fabulous. Rich in lanolin (and sheep poo), I know it's going to be an excellent mulch and may even help keep the slugs at bay.
The coffee sacks are great packaging idea and an added bonus for me. I can't wait to reuse them!
Why, oh why, oh why were they then packaged inside the biggest black plastic sacks I've ever seen?
I made a pledge of no new plastic at my allotment and I'm feeling very let down. This is a great product, I'd be delighted to have more of it, BUT NOT IF IT COMES WRAPPED IN PLASTIC!

Hi Sarah
Thanks for your email and I was sorry to read the review especially before the email so I was going to reply on there - but I will do so here.
I checked the description and it does say no plastic. This was not meant to be misleading - it was about the product which we choose hessian for and the mulch is natural as you know. Nevertheless I am copying in Rob to delete this in case of other misunderstanding.
In terms of the black plastic bag - I really can’t see a greener alternative. We can’t use hessian for the courier or for the label and obviously the size of cardboard box would be very expensive and be much less environmental than a
Recycled black bag so I don’t see any way around that and compared to packing most things in plastic I think we really stand out- we use paper when we can and woven polypropylene without any outer packing when we have to use a large bag for birdseed. We use paper tape instead of plastic and take bag bags to reuse.
If you have a better idea please let me know and if you feel this is fair I would be grateful if you would consider updating your review - obviously no probs if not - I will post my reply there
All the very best and I hope the product is great for you and you enjoy it
All best
Heather
