Bokashi composting is an anaerobic fermentation process using Effective Microorganisms (EM) — a blend of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria that pre-digest food waste without smell or mess.

The 5 Simple Steps

1️⃣ Add Scraps: Layer any food waste into your Organko bin.
2️⃣ Sprinkle Bran: Add 2–3 tbsp of Bokashi Bran after each layer.
3️⃣ Compact & Seal: Use the compactor to press down, remove air, and close the airtight lid.
4️⃣ Ferment: Leave sealed for 10–14 days, draining Bokashi Tea every few days.
5️⃣ Bury or Compost: Once fermented, bury it 15–20 cm deep in soil or add to a compost heap — it breaks down fully within 2–4 weeks.

The result? A nutrient-dense pre-compost teeming with beneficial microbes that enrich soil, boost plant growth, and improve structure.

Every year the UK wastes over 9 million tonnes of food, much of which ends up in landfill — releasing methane, a greenhouse gas 84 × stronger than CO₂.

Bokashi composting is a simple household solution that:
🌱 Diverts hundreds of kilos of waste from landfill.
💧 Produces a rich compost tea and soil conditioner.
🌿 Locks nutrients into your soil instead of the atmosphere.
🍅 Improves soil structure, moisture retention and fertility.

💚 Wiggly Tip: Pair your Bokashi system with a wormery to turn fermented waste into finished compost — fast, odour-free, and bursting with biology.

Developed in Japan by Dr Teruo Higa in the 1980s, Bokashi uses EM technology to preserve and stabilise organic matter.

  • Lactic Acid Bacteria – convert sugars into organic acids that prevent rot and smell.
  • Yeasts – enhance fermentation and add nutrients.
  • Photosynthetic Bacteria – synthesise amino acids and support healthy soil ecosystems.

This unique microbial mix transforms your food waste into pre-digested organic material, ready to feed your soil’s living network.

Wiggly Wigglers’ Bokashi Active Bran is made on our Herefordshire farm using the EM-1 microbial inoculant. We ferment wheat bran with molasses and microbes, dry it naturally, and pack it fresh.

Every Organko kit sold helps fund our regenerative work:
🌾 improving soil biology,
🐝 supporting pollinators,
🐄 reducing waste on our mixed family farm,
🌳 building a circular food system that connects homes to the land.

When you compost with Bokashi, you join our effort to return organic matter to the soil — From Our Farm to Your Footprint.

The Wiggly Story: Bringing Your Garden to Life.

Nestled in the heart of rural Herefordshire, within The Duchy of Cornwall estate lies Lower Blakemere Farm – the cherished home of Wiggly Wigglers and founder, Heather Gorringe. From its humble beginnings on Heather’s kitchen table over 30 years ago, our small but dedicated team is working hard on a legacy of sustainability and regeneration. Our farm isn’t merely a plot of land; it’s a dynamic hub where we’re aiming to balance food production with biodiversity and since we started our regenerative journey there’s a real focus on improving soil health and sustainability. What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
