Yellow Rattle

Named for the rattling sound made by its ripe seeds, this pretty wildflower may look innocent but it packs a deadly punch when it comes to keeping down unwanted grass. The plant is semi-parasitic, its roots tapping into those of surrounding grasses for nutrients. This suppresses the grass, making more room for the Yellow Rattle and the other wildflowers in your garden.

In flower from May to September, reaching a height of up to 500mm, it is an annual plant whose prolific seed production allows it to colonise a meadow quite quickly. The seed needs 3 months of cold temperatures after sowing to promote germination... so, the ideal time to sow is in the autumn. Sow sparsely over an area from which it can spread.
