Five Simple Steps to Restart A Wormery

Cleaning and restarting an old, unused wormery with live composting worms and coir bedding is a great way to revitalise the system. Here are five simple steps to guide you through the process:

    1. Empty the Wormery:

      • Remove any remaining compost or bedding from the wormery. Place the contents on a plastic sheet or in a container to contain the mess.

      • Inspect the material for any large debris, non-compostable items, or signs of pests. Dispose of any unwanted material.

    2. Separate Worms from Compost (if you have any left):

      • Carefully sift through the compost to separate the live worms from the finished compost. You can use your hands or a specialised worm composting tool.

      • Be gentle with the worms to avoid harming them. Set aside the live worms in a temporary container.

    3. Clean the Wormery:

      • Thoroughly clean the wormery with water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can harm the worms. A mixture of water and a small amount of vinegar can help disinfect without being harmful.

      • Scrub the surfaces of the wormery to remove any remaining residue. Rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry.

    4. Prepare Coir Bedding:

      • Soak coir (coconut fibre) block in water according to the package instructions. This will expand the coir and make it a suitable bedding material for the worms.

      • Fluff the coir with your hands and spread it evenly at the bottom of the cleaned wormery. Ensure that the coir is moist but not waterlogged.

    5. Reintroduce Worms and Fresh Food:

      • Place the new worms into the wormery on top of the coir bedding. Spread them out evenly.

      • Add fresh kitchen scraps or other compostable materials on the surface. Start with a small amount initially to allow the worms to adjust.

      • Cover the wormery with a lid to maintain a stable environment. Place the wormery in a shaded area to protect it from direct sunlight.

Remember to monitor the moisture level in the wormery and adjust it by adding water or more dry bedding if necessary. Regularly feed the worms with kitchen scraps and maintain a healthy balance of green and brown materials for optimal composting.
