They are unique because their plants flower above ground while the fertilised pods develop underground. After flowering, the stem of the peanut plant pushes the immature pod into the soil where it grows horizontally and matures safely. This underground development hides the pods, unlike other legumes which hang in the open. Each plant can produce over forty pods, each containing two or more peanuts, maturing over four to five months.
