The most important concern when providing habitat for all things wild is situation. Ground boxes such as Hoggy Homes should be placed in a sheltered position, protected from the prevailing conditions.

In effect you are providing a warm, safe void for the hedgehogs to build their nest in and sleep safely over the colder months. These boxes are best placed in an area which is unlikely to be disturbed from autumn through to next spring. And don’t be tempted to have a peek inside over this period, you will be able to see if your box has been occupied on investigation after March.

Hoggy Home

• Put your Hoggy Home in the butt of a hedge, in the bottom of your compost heap or base of your log pile. Alternatively, place your box in a secluded spot in your garden then cover it with leaf litter and possibly the prunings from your shrubs.

• Hibernating creatures need to be warm and dry, so avoid siting the box in either exposed or wet areas of your garden.

• Try to avoid any disturbance of the Hoggy Home during the winter because if animals break hibernation early they may well not make it through.

Within 2 days of placing my Wigglers hog house in my garden I am delighted to report it has already attracted a resident….
I placed a small amount of hay inside and then left addition hay outside which was dragged in over the next few nights. I found this method worked extremely well allowing the hedgehog to put in as much as he wants.
The house it well made; my only negative comment would be the ‘cleaning’ door at the rear is very small.
If the Hog houses came with a bag of hay I would say they would be perfect.
I haven't stacked logs around it, it just sits under a bush near to where I feed my hedgehogs. (Posted on 30/11/2012)
