Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (or D.E. for short), is a big name for an amazing product with a long, long list of uses.

DE is, in fact, the fossilised remains of countless millions of microscopically tiny unicellular plants, called diatoms, that live in every sea and lake. DE powder is produced by grinding DE bearing rock into a fine, white powder that is used around the world to undertake all sorts of tasks from purifying water to polishing metal!

Although these may seem very different problems they can all be solved in the same way: by absorption. The intricately woven shells of the diatoms in the powder act as a super sponge, soaking up huge amounts of water and oils and their associated smells.

This makes it particularly beneficial for controlling odours and moisture so flies are less likely to be any problem. Simply use the puffer nozzle in the 100g bottle to add a light dusting of DE powder to the top of the wormery's contents. This is the best method we know of for keeping flies away from a Can-O-Worms or Worm Factory.

It has dozens of other uses too.
Mix it with compost and it will improve the compost's moisture retention and nutrient uptake. Add it to animal feeds to help keep pets and stock healthy. Or even treat pet and livestock bedding with it to reduce odours.
Please note, that people with lung diseases should avoid breathing-in the DE dust.
Plants have stronger roots and top growth and greater fruit yield while seeds coated with DE may germinate sooner (proven in Market Garden trials)

Certainly does the business with the flies in compost bins and wormerys Review by Jennifer Longton

Certainly does the business with the flies in compost bins and wormerys. I have the smaller pack and find the hole can block and needs a bang to clear before use. Will buy the box next time.
I discovered this amazing powder last year when my hens had fleas. Review by Shirley Stafford

I discovered this amazing powder last year when my hens had fleas. They were gone in a week. I now dust the nest box and places in the garden that they have their dust baths. We also use it as an insecticide mixed with rock dust on our fruit trees. Red spider mite! all gone.

DE is amazing stuff Review by Fiona
Review
DE is amazing stuff, we use it on our dogs and cats and around the house. I puff it around the edges of the rooms and on the stairs, leave it for a day then hoover up. Its a great way to rid your home and pets of fleas if you hate using chemicals.
Sounds great for the wormery, but be careful of sprinkling it around the house Review by Wine student

Sounds great for the wormery, but be careful of sprinkling it around the house- I use it in wine production (as a filtration media) and as it is a known carcinogen (gets in the lungs) we have to use a face mask when handling even small amounts. It is a very fine dust and will get into the air easily so I'd suggest not using it indoors.

Fantastic product. Has freed my chickens of the dreaded red mite. Will always use it in the chicken coop from now on, just wish I'd known about it earlier!
.It has so many uses and its environmentally friendly too Review by Fiona

I use it to flea my dogs and cats. I also puff some on my dogs poop in the garden before bagging and putting it in the bin. It stops maggots/flies in the bin...It has so many uses and its environmentally friendly too. Make sure you don't breath in the dust and only puff onto pets outside.
I LOVE this Review by Am

I LOVE this, it is one of my favourite products. Not only does it just seem to keep lasting but I use it in both wormeries, for keeping woodlice out of my utility room, de-odourising the cat litters and kitchen bins etc. It has so many uses!
