An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

By Heather 11 years ago

It’s a celebration of the humble apple today from the Wiggly sofa. Rachel Harries reports for this week’s show from a Herefordshire orchard where she has been learning about (and sampling) old varieties of apple, some of which are very rare. You can read up about all sorts of orchard news on the England in Particular web site.

Richard confesses to Farmer Phil that he has allowed a visiting group to scrump all the apples from the Wiggly garden and Rachel demonstrates the amazing apple peeler and corer.

Richard also tells us all about the little grown vegetable salsify and what you can do with it.

Welcome to the 3rd anniversary edition of the Wiggly podcast. Richard is outside his house, enjoying one of the only balmy evenings of the year, watching house martins preparing to return to Africa.

Farmer Phil explains that harvest time this year is proving to be a bit of a challenge and not helped by his chums at DEFRA!

We are pleased to welcome back Rachel Harries who will be with us until Christmas and has been assigned several tasks, including coming up with interesting facts about products and tweaking the Wiggly web site.

And last, but not least, don’t forget the Terry and Ricardo special, “Definitely not Gardeners’ Question Time” at Preston-on-Wye Village Hall at 7.30 pm on 10 October 2008. The ticket price is £10, which includes a glass of mulled cider and a light supper. The profits from this event will be shared between St. Michael's Hospice and the Bobath Centre (for children with Cerebral Palsy).

The team meet on the sofa with Christine Hope of Longtown and Gareth, temp extraordinaire. Heather just can’t resist mentioning that Christine has recently appeared on The Weakest Link and reached the 5th round, unlike a certain pink faced and shirted Ricardo who made it to the 3rd round. Potato growing, worm breeding Gareth (whose Mum does some wicked baking) talks about his experiences in the Wiggly office.

Richard catches up with Pippa Rosen from Beans and Herbs to hear all about her seed growing business and she even takes him to gather seed in the rain.
