Our patch of Barley looked great waving in the breeze in our last Show Garden, so we've decided to offer seed to let you sow your own patch.

Rob, our flower expert, has chosen a barley with green awns, as it looks great when it's in ear.

Cereals are a valuable food source for many birds, but sparrows particularly like them when they are in the ear, as do many other small farmland birds. Small mammals, such as field mice and voles, also enjoy nibbling on the odd cereal, and the shelter they offer provides good, safe habitats for them.

Barley can also be picked for display indoors and, if dried, can last almost indefinitely.

This is a Winter Barley, and must be sown before the end of March, the best time is August to the end of December.

Sow on a firm bed, 12mm deep. Can be planted in rows (approximately 115mm apart) or at random. Sow at a rate of approximately 25g per m2.
