Further to my earlier 'review' - more uses for the 'Compost Mate' keep appearing, beyond the obvious ones of aerating the compost from above, and dragging the impacted layer out of the bin's 'front-door'.
This year I have used it for planting bulbs by taking out a 'plug' to the depth required - - mark the stem with coloured tape or thread for a depth-guage - and then 'tap' the plug back on top of two or three bulbs - job done !
And finally - I use it for making holes into which to plant shrubs, etc. - it produces a hole large enough to plant out from a 12cm or 5" pot, and even larger holes are simply a matter of making a 'pattern' of two, three or more holes, which join up easily with a trowel or fork.

I have been using a 'propeller-type' aerator for a while, with wings which fold in as the tool is pushed 'in' and open to pull at the compost as pulled out - but it's not a patch on my new (imported) 'Compost Mate' from WW.
Not only is it a great tool for aerating from above but, on 'Dalek' compost-bins with their small access doors, it's a boon for dragging out the finished but impacted compost from low down in the bin. But do KNEEL down and use the tool horizontally or back-ache will result !
(Oh, and by the way - don't try to bring one back from Oz as hand-luggage, as I did: it was classed as 'dangerous goods' and I never saw it again. I hope it went to a good (composting) home.......)

This tool is the best compost turning tool I have used. It is strong and easy to use. If you screw it in too far and cannot lift up the plug of material, you unscrew a little bit and try lifting again. I am a strong chap and easily break stuff... this has survived a lot of heavy use.
The only disadvantage is that they are made in Australia and shipped over.... but hopefully the benefits of stirring your heap and therefore people being able to compost more will outweigh these carbon emissions...

If you own a plastic compost bin then you know how hard it is to turn the compost. A compost mate makes this so much easier and by mixing up the compost allows the air in so you get really nice, usable compost in a lot less time.
